How to Not Get Super Bored During Quarantine

I hope everyone reading this is happy and safe. We are living in some crazy times right now. I’m currently in NYC (where COVID is having a party), and doing everything in my power to social distance and do my part to help flatten the curve. As much as I’d love to get out of my studio apartment, I find myself needing to dodge people more often than I’d like when I go out for walks. If you’re like me, or have been ordered to stay indoors, here are a couple of fun activities to keep your brain and your body going (if you want to!).

I want to add here that if you need more time to process this information and do absolutely NOTHING – that is so OK. You don’t need to be productive right now, but do your best not to isolate yourself. I think it’s still important to call friends and family, continue work with your therapist and/or dietitian, and make sure you’re eating enough. Taking care of your mental health is so important right now.

If and when you’re ready for anything more, here is a list I created to help you out:

Self Care:

  • Read a feel good book! I’m currently reading this book. Also recommend this, this and this. I have so many I’ll probably do a separate post for this!
  • Journal
  • Take a bubble bath
  • Face mask/hair masks (I’ve had this one forever that I want to use)
  • Meditation (I love Headspace App)
  • Adult coloring books or activity books
  • Burn a scented candle
  • Listen to music while curled up in a comfy blanket
  • Schedule appointments with your therapist and/or dietitian

For Your Brain:

  • Take a class from an Ivy League school (for free here!)
  • Word puzzles or regular puzzles
  • Start a blog or podcast
  • Take classes on Skillshare
  • Catch up on all those webinars you’ve been meaning to watch
  • Learn a new language (so many apps out there!)
  • Virtually tour 2,500 World Famous Museums (how cool?!). Check out this post for all of the links and access.

For Your Body:

Another note here: If not being able to exercise is giving you extreme anxiety and discomfort, I invite you to explore your relationship with exercise a bit further. This might be the perfect opportunity to take a break and really dig in with your therapist and/or dietitian.

  • Stream free yoga classes
  • Take a walk (if it’s safe!)
  • Take a virtual class with Loco Motion New York (one of my personal forms of movement right now!). E-mail to sign up: locomotionnewyork@gmail.com
  • Work on your weakest link – mine is pull-ups! I ordered this pull-up bar
  • Foam roll – here’s a good one
  • Clean the house or organize closets

For Connection:

  • Face Time family and friends
  • Have a virtual Happy Hour
  • Have a virtual Dance Party
  • Watch Netflix with friends via the Rave app or Netflix Party
  • Have a virtual book club or film club

Hope these help! What would you add?
